Code of Conduct

Welcome to Back Home Again in Indiana (BHAII)! We are so happy to have you here! To help us foster a safe, comfortable, and enjoyable community experience for all, all participants (defined as: staff, attendees, instructors, volunteers) are expected to adhere to the principles outlined in the Code of Conduct below. Organizers and safe spaces volunteers will implement this Code during the event and reserve the right to take appropriate action to keep participants safe.

NEED HELP?

We are here to support you! If you are feeling uncomfortable or unsafe, or if you witness behavior that violates this Code of Conduct, please find an organizer or volunteer (anyone wearing a lanyard) or safe spaces volunteer (designated by Safe Spaces button), use our online safety report form below, or email safety@backhomeagain.dance

SAFETY BASICS

Back Home Again in Indiana strives to create a welcoming space where participants can dance together, create community, engage in discussion and mutual learning, and feel included. At all times, be courteous and respectful to everyone, regardless of their age, body shape, ethnic background, gender identity, life choices, political beliefs, race, religious beliefs (or lack thereof), sexual orientation, dance role, skill level, etc. There will be security guards at the Indiana Landmarks venue.

RESPECTING OTHER PARTICIPANTS

  • Harassment is prohibited: This includes offensive comments, intimidation, stalking, inappropriate physical contact, unwelcome sexual attention, and sustained disruptions to classes and social events.

  • Respect boundaries: Acknowledge and respect verbal and nonverbal personal boundaries at all times, including mobility devices (e.g., wheelchairs, canes). Do not touch or move another participant or their mobility device without their explicit consent.

  • Asking others to dance: Ensure you are consistently asking others if they would like to dance, including what role they would like to dance, and honor their response. Not respecting another dancer’s refusal or insisting on an explanation is prohibited. When someone asks you to dance, respond how you are most comfortable; you do not owe anyone an explanation.

  • No aerials: Aerials or air steps are strictly prohibited on the social floor for all participants. This includes any move where a dancer’s weight is supported primarily by their partner, or where both of their feet leave the ground.

  • Floor craft/body awareness: Ensure you are mindful of spacing, your movement, and your body to avoid collisions and injuries on and off the dance floor. Accidents are bound to happen! Apologize if you bump yourself or your partner into someone else, or if you are aware that you made someone feel unsafe.

  • Giving Advice: At times, there will be opportunities for sharing and feedback between dancers. You are welcome to give feedback regarding your perspective during these opportunities. Do not criticise other people for their dancing. Giving unsolicited advice about others’ dancing during social dancing is not appropriate, unless someone’s safety is endangered.

ENGAGING IN THE COMMUNITY

  • Language matters: Misogynistic, homophobic, transphobic, ablest, racist, or other discriminatory language will not be tolerated.

  • Respectful discussion: Sharing perspectives and learning as a community is a fundamental part of BHAII. Open dialogue is encouraged and disagreements should be handled with respect.

USING THE PHYSICAL SPACE

  • Outside alcohol, smoking, and illegal drug use: Alcohol, tobacco, or illegal drug use is prohibited during official event activities and at any event venue. Any individual who appears intoxicated to the point where it affects safety or the experience of others will be asked to leave the event.

  • Designated spaces: While at the venues, remain in spaces that are designated as part of BHAII events. Specific information about event spaces will be provided at the event.

  • Accessibility: BHAII dance venue spaces are ADA compliant (with the exception of the stage at Indiana Landmarks and the DJ booth at LE Dance Studio). If you have specific accessibility needs that are not being supported, please let an organizer know so that they can help.

  • Sensory friendly break space: The Rapp Family Gallery, located in the lower level, is available for participants to use as they need to take breaks and regulate. When using this space, please be respectful of others by keeping noise low and giving others plenty of personal space.

We want everyone to have a fantastic and safe experience at Back Home Again in Indiana! Safe Spaces Coordinators (designated by Safe Spaces name tag) are available throughout the event in case any issues arise. While event organizers reserve the right to take appropriate action in situations that compromise safety, including asking participants to leave without a refund, our primary goal is to foster a welcoming, respectful, and enjoyable environment for all. Thank you for taking the time to review this code of conduct. See you on the dance floor!
